Understanding the Foundation of Leadership

Leadership begins the moment you decide who you want to be. Many people assume that stepping into a leadership role or holding a specific title will automatically transform them into a leader. However, the reality is quite different. The true turning point comes when you reflect deeply on your own identity as a leader.

A Personal Reflection

When I first became a leader, I expected the title to bring about an instant transformation. But the real change happened in a quiet conference room when my mentor asked me a powerful question: “Who do you want to be when people look to you?” At that moment, I realized I didn’t have an answer. This experience is common among new leaders. Most of us start out by adopting habits from previous managers, imitating what we’ve observed, and hoping those approaches will work. Yet, genuine leadership only begins when you consciously decide who you are as a leader.

The Power of Intentional Identity

A few years ago, I worked closely with a manager who was neither the loudest nor the most experienced person in the room. Despite this, her team had immense trust in her. When asked why, her team explained, “She knows exactly who she is — and she leads from that place.” This leader had invested time and effort into understanding herself, which became the foundation of her leadership.

·      She was clear about her values.

·      She recognized her strengths.

·      She understood the type of leader she did not want to become.

Her clarity provided consistency, allowing her team to always know what to expect from her.

Your Leadership Identity Framework

To define your own leadership identity, consider the following framework:

·      Values: What principles guide your decisions?

·      Strengths: What do you naturally bring to the table?

·      Impact: How do you want people to feel after interacting with you?

Remember, leadership identity is not determined by your title. It is a deliberate choice you make every day. Make your leadership identity visible through your actions and decisions.
